But God

Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him For the help of His countenance. ~Psalm 42:5, NKJV

As I listened to the choir singing the Brooklyn Tabernacle song “He’s Been Faithful” in church one morning, my eyes filled with tears at the lyrics. The song speaks to how God’s faithfulness toward us never fails, even in our moments of weakness, doubt, and unbelief. You see, I know the times the enemy came after my mind, came after my children and my personal relationships; the times I felt so rejected and hurt, I thought only suicide would ease my discomfort. But God stepped into the midst of my situation, into the story, saying, “Come unto me all ye that are heavy laden and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

The enemy of our souls, Satan himself, was telling me the only way out, the only way to rest, was for me to kill myself. But God, who is so faithful, stepped in and told me that I am a member of a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a Holy nation, part of a peculiar people (1 Peter 1:9). He not only told me how much He cared for me and loved me, but He also showed me. Yes, the enemy came in like a flood, but God lifted up a standard against him (Isaiah 59:19).

I submit to you from a personal experience that there is nothing going on in your life or has gone on in your life that our God Jehovah is not aware of. Therefore, I implore you to stand still and experience the peace that only God can bring in your situation. Remember, weeping may endure for a night, but God’s Word tells us that joy will come in the morning (Psalm 30:5).

So how do you keep your head up even as tears flow (real ones and the silent ones) and you can’t physically see your way through and out? Stay in the Word of God, which is the Holy Bible. Meditate on what God shows you in His Word day and night. Pray constantly. Praise God even if you’re not feeling it. Finally, know that our God is not a respecter of persons. What He did for Moses, Paul, Peter, and me, He will do for you because He is a “But God.”
